FireTrac^TM uses a combination of 1394 and Mil1394 support in hardware, as well as a robust, well designed 1394 software Stack (FireStack®) running on a host computer. Interfacing to this stack can be done via an API that offers LabView and C/C++ interfaces on multiple platforms. Currently DapTechnology supports Windows and, VxWorks. Support for Linux, IRIX and NI-Visa (LabView RT, LabWindows RT) platforms are either planned or in development.

An essential feature of FireTrac^TM is its thin software and firmware layer. In order to be usable in embedded designs having limited resources, great emphasis was given to keep the footprint and host system resource utilization as small as possible. And, in order to optimize and streamline performance, the individual features and functions of FireTrac^TM are grouped into so-called Personality Profiles. These profiles may be purchased separately so that the user may configure their system based on individual requirements.

- Low-Level API Profile:

The low-level API basically contains the kernel-level driver for the FireTrac card as well as simple packet-oriented functions for transmission and reception. Functional modules included in the other profiles will use this functionality to implement more complex tasks.

- 1394 Software Stack Profile

Contains the following functional modules as well as the Low-Level API.

Pre-defined Configuration ROM which is user-configurable
Inbound Transactions
Outbound Transactions
Isochronous Transmission
Isochronous Reception

- 1394 Software Stack + Bus Management Profile

Contains functionality to implement the following capabilities on the local node as well as all functionality included in the 1394 Software Stack Profile.

Iso Resource Manager
Cycle Master
Bus Manager

- Mil1394 Bus Interface Profile

This module offers the following dedicated Mil1394 functionality:

Transmission
Reception

- Advanced Mil1394 Bus Interface Profile

This module contains all functionality contained in the Mil1394 Bus Interface Profile as well as the following:

Hardware Data Extraction
Hardware Data Insertion
Low-Level API Profile
